Welcome

Welcome to the website of the Trustees of Holt Lowes. The Lowes (as everyone calls it) is an area of heathland, bog, fen and woodland just to the south of the small town of Holt in North Norfolk. It lies to the east of the B1149 and  just to the south of Holt Country Park (which is owned by North Norfolk District Council, but is not to be confused with the Country Park). To the south the Lowes is bounded by the River Glaven.

The existence of Holt Lowes is bound up with geology (it lies at the southern end of the Holt-Cromer ridge, a glacial moraine) as well as the social and political history of the region – it was once part of ‘Holt Heath’ and is still technically a ‘Poors’ Allotment’. Most importantly, its chequered history has resulted in an area of outstanding interest for its wildlife, and a piece of wilderness set amidst an ordered landscape of plantations and fields. This website aims to tell the tale of a very special place for wildlife.

Important Information for this spring and summer

From April 1 to August 31st ALL dogs must be on a short lead. This is to protect all the wildlife of the Lowes, but especially ground nesting birds.
