There are only 4 species of 2 genera in the UK. The commonest genera is <em><strong>Panorpa<\/strong><\/em> &#8211; the image is probably <em><strong>P.communis<\/strong><\/em>. All are relatively common, except in the far north of the UK. All have a downwards pointing beak. They are predators of small invertebrates <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They get their name because the male genital area at the tip of the abdomen is swollen and curved upwards like a scorpions sting. However they are not poisonous  A mere pretend to sting seems to ward of potential predators<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>Heath Assasin Bug<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p> Bugs are an order of insects which suck fluids from a variety of plant and animal souces. the have a hypodermic like stylet mouthpart to do this. They hunt insects and spidrs and should be handled with care -they bite and can pierce the skin<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/holtlowes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Heath-Assassin-Bug-3909.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-636 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/holtlowes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Heath-Assassin-Bug-3909.jpg 500w, https:\/\/holtlowes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Heath-Assassin-Bug-3909-300x240.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spiders<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p>Spiders or Arachnids typically have 4 pairs of legs. The Lowes has huge numbers, especiallu over the dry heath. They have typically long front legs<\/p>\n<\/div><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/holtlowes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Common-Orb-weaver-0006768.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-635 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/holtlowes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Common-Orb-weaver-0006768.jpg 500w, https:\/\/holtlowes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Common-Orb-weaver-0006768-300x240.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Funnel-web Spiders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>These are common on the Lowes. They build a funnel shaped web which has at its centre a tube which will contain the eggs and which the spider can hide. It sits at the front of the tube with its legs testing for any movements of the web caused by a prey species landing on the funnel. Typical prey are grasshoppers.
